Bishop of St Albans

Christopher Herbert was consecrated a bishop in November 1995 and enthroned as Bishop of St Albans in January 1996. Christopher Herbert was born in Lydney in the Forest of Dean. He was educated at Monmouth School and read Biblical Studies and Philosophy at the University of Wales in 1967 after attending Wells Theological College, and served as Curate at St Paul's, Tupsley in Herefordshire. During this period he taught religious education in local schools and later became RE Adviser and Diocesan Director of Education. He was made a Prebendary of Hereford Cathedral in 1977.

In 1981 he became Vicar of The Bourne, near Farnham in Surrey. He was appointed as Director of Post-Ordination training in the diocese of Guildford and made a Canon of the Cathedral, becoming Archdeacon of Dorking in 1990.

He is a strong supporter of a Church presence on the Internet and hopes that it will lead to an increased commitment to intelligent and articulate theology.

A prolific author, he has written books on prayer & spirituality and confirmation training. Among his best known works are Ways into Prayer, (Church House Publishing, 1987), and Pocket Prayers, (Church House Publishing, 1993).

Bishop Christopher has set himself an energetic schedule in his first years in post, giving a high priority on the support and training of diocesan clergy and staff.

He has also declared a commitment to building commercial and civic links in the diocesan area. His words have been matched by a taxing itinerary of visits to local authorities, large small companies, schools prisons and community projects.
